howdy!

dave noticed this on some truck's antenna

Dave and I continued our Monday ritual of coffee and general slackering today.  First stop was Vulcan Video to return some videos.  Jacob and Mitch were working.  I really like Mitch.  He's the person I probably spoke to most when I was in Leeds besides my mom, so he shaped my perception of Austin while I was away.  When Mitch saw my new car he lamented that I sold my little purple scooter which made me a bit sad.  I suppose that thing was a pretty big part of my identity in Austin.  I do miss it.  I'll sell my Toyota and buy a Vespa when I come back maybe.  I knew pretty much everyone I saw in the video store in that ten minutes I was there, which reminded me of one of the reasons I left Austin.  I saw a guy named Paul there who I only know through Jacob and from seeing him in the video store.  He challenged me to remember his name and I did.  After all I am a teacher.  Then came this girl named Annie who's the most mentally insane person I'm acquaintances with.  I saw her in Eckerds the other day trying on every single pair of sunglasses, and now here returning videos.   I wonder which ones, I should have looked.  Probably Psycho, Carrie or something...  She always seems a little bit scared of me, but a little bit pissed off as well, and I can't figure out why.  I always make her say hi.  Maybe that's why.  She stayed in my house for the longest time, though not with my permission, because she was friend's with Merilee.  She always gave me dirty looks then too on her way to and from the bathroom.  How odd.

Neither Dave and I have been to the Texas History Museum, so we made that trip today.  I saw this building being built outside of the Sanchez Building at UT, where I had most of my classes, so I've been interested in going here for a long time.  I was well impressed.   I'm excited about taking Nigel here to see the "Star of Destiny" Texas History interactive theatre exhibit.  Dave and I were the first ones to sit down in the theatre, and then about 200 school kids on a summer texas history learning program filled the rest of the seats.  It was the only way to watch this exhibit in my opinion.  After the snake pops up out of the seat to poke your butt during the discussion on snakes, it took them all about a minute to calm down.  Funny.  At the end of the exhibit the guy in the video explains that you don't have to be from Texas to have to have the spirit of Texas in you and points to the audience and says, "Yes, the Spirit of Texas is in all of you!".  I thought that was a little bit overboard, but I'm sure it filled those kids with texas pride, at least until lunchtime.

This debutante dress had the Alamo embroidered into it.   I think I'll wear this to my debutante ball.

We're proud that "Houston" was the first word on the moon.

Later in the day Dave noticed a truck that had a sticker on the back with Calvin in a sombrero peeing on the words "La Migra".   I appreciate this a lot more now after dealing with british immigration department.  I might put one on my truck if there was a British equivalent.
