While walking around campus today I heard a rally going on.  To my surprise it was the Democratic rally for the upcoming elections.  The democratic campaign has become a farce lately.  There are some amusing scandals this year if you have the inclination to pay attention to the commercials and mudslinging.

I stayed around to listen to them for a few minutes as I had no idea what the issues were, and also because on of my favorite politicians Anne Richards was there.  She was governor of Texas when I first moved here, and she ran a clever campaign against our now president for governor.

John Sharp, who was running for lieutenant governor, said "this election will be won on issues", but did not mention his stand on any issues other than education.  I know he was at the University of Texas, but students care about more issues other than their own education for goodness sakes.  It was disappointing to walk away not knowing what the "issues" were in this election they were supposed to win on.  Statements like "because he's right for Texas", or "he cares about homeland security" seem to be good enough these days for both parties in place of a real platform.  Even after the recent debates on the news I couldn't tell you where the major candidates stand on the death penalty, going to war, affirmative action, etc...

It has been going this way for a while, but living in the UK where they are only allowed to campaign for a few weeks before the election really emphasized the ridiculousness of politics in Texas.
